Porsche Sprint Challenge Central Europe returns from summer break at Autodrom Grobnik for round 4 of 2024 season
The fast and challenging Autodrom Grobnik in Croatia set a great stage for the fourth round of the PSCCE. Situated in a very nice landscape between the mountains and the sea, it not only was a great place to be for teams and drivers coming out of the summer break, but also for families and friends. Porsche Croatia had set up an interesting entertainment program with kids´ areas, car presentations, DJs, food trucks – about everything you can think of, which attracted a lot of people and was well received.
After an extensive test day on Friday under a sunny blue sky which gave the drivers a great opportunity to familiarize themselves wit the track ant to fine-tune their skills again, the same nice weather greeted everybody on Saturday for qualifying and race action.
Lithuania dominated when the 12 cars went out for the two qualifyings with two PSCCE regulars unfortunately missing. Milan Sitniansky had to withdraw due to illness and Herbert Geiss was busy at the same time at the Nürburgring with the Ferrari Challenge. Eduardas Klepikas set pole position for the two Sprint races, followed by his fellow countryman Marius Bartkus in P2 and Beat Ganz from Switzerland in P3 for race one. Ivan Peklin from Ukraine made it to the front row for race 2 with another Lithuanian, Egidijus Grazys in P3. Best in the AM category were Austrian Herbert Karrer and Swiss Peter Brunner respectively.
In race one, Klepikas after a very clean start where he remained in the lead from pole position pulled away lap by lap immediately and scored another dominant victory: In the end he won 15 seconds ahead of German Ulrich Ziegler, who made up a few positions after starting from P4. Ziegler had a hard fight with Tomasz Lach for quite some time, but passed him on lap 11, while the polish driver in the end also lost out to Beat Ganz, who finished in P3. Bartkus dropped down the order from the front row of the grid and only came home fifth.
In a very close fight over the whole distance Peter Brecka from the Czech Republic won the AM category after a very good start from P11, just 0.7 seconds ahead of Swiss driver Peter Brunner. Günther Benninger unfortunately had an off into the grass on lap 16 in Turn 5 and ended up in the barriers, which meant the end of his race weekend,
In race two, Klepikas again was the dominant winner, this time 18 seconds ahead of Tomasz Lach from Poland and Egidijus Grazys, as Ulrich Ziegler and Ivan Peklin, who had been in the fight for P2 for a long time, collided on lap 14. Ziegler managed to continue and still finished in P4, while Peklin had to retire. Aurelijus Rusteika, another Lithuanian driver, received a three-second penalty for being out of the starting corridor with two wheels. The AM class again saw a very close fight over the whole distance between Peter Brecka and Peter Brunner, with the Czech coming out on top again just three tenth of a second ahead.
The third race of the day, the Endurance race, then saw a lot of action. It already started on the formation lap, when Ulrich Ziegler had some problems with his car, but in the end still managed to start and chase the field after having lost one lap, finally finishing in P9. His problems caused a bit of a confusion, so Tomasz Lach started from P2 instead of from P4, for which he was given a ten-second penalty.
But even this could not stop him and Dutch Pro-driver Jaap van Lagen from winning the 100 Miles of Croatia. Eduardas Klepikas, winner of the two Sprint races, had to settle in P2 this time after having taken over car Nr. 27 from his Lithuanian fellow countryman Tauras Tunyla still in the lead, but with no chance against the flying Dutchman in the second half of the race. Car nr. 80 and Car nr. 66 had their race ended early in the first half after a collision between Eigidijus Grazys and Alex Ellinger, for which the Lithuanian guest starter received a three-places grid penalty for the next race. Peter Brunner from Switzerland not only won the AM category, but also finished in a very strong third place in the overall classification.
Before the fifth and final round of the season at the Autodromo Brno in the Czech Republic in two weeks time, Klepikas is leading the overall Sprint championship 18 points ahead of Ziegler, while in the Endurance championship Herbert Geiss, even as a non-starter this time, is still 17 points ahead of Tomasz Lach. In the AM class, Peter Brecka leads the Sprint classification with four points from Peter Brunner, while the Swiss in the Endurance classification is 13 points ahead of Herbert Karrer, Brecka and Karel Neffe.
