A challenging weekend in Barcelona for BWT Lechner Racing comes to an end

BWT Lechner Racing endured a challenging second round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with the team leaving Spain without the result it had hoped for. After all there were some positive takeaways from the weekend, most notably a strong drive by Porsche Junior Marcus Amand.

Despite the disappointing outcome with de Haan, the team was able to take positives from the performances of Amand and Sumich as attention now turns to the next round of the championship.

The Austrian squad showed competitive pace throughout the event, particularly in qualifying. Robert de Haan appeared set to secure pole position before his fastest lap was deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn 14. Following post-qualifying scrutineering, a technical irregularity was identified on his car, resulting in the deletion of all remaining lap times. Consequently, de Haan was required to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid.

Despite the setback, the Dutch driver made a strong start and was making progress through the field before becoming an innocent victim of an incident in Turn 10, when another driver overshot the braking zone and hit his car. The resulting steering damage ultimately forced his retirement.

One of the standout performances of the weekend came from Marcus Amand. Starting from eighth on the grid, the Porsche Junior delivered a mature and determined drive, gaining four positions to finish fourth.

“A very positive result for me. I didn’t manage to maximize everything in qualifying, but the team gave me an incredible car the whole weekend that enabled me to bounce back on Sunday for a strong result.”

“For Robert and the team it was a very tough weekend that we want to put behind us as quickly as possible but we all know we will come back stronger! Marcus drove a great race and proved to us that we have the car and potential to run at the front!”

Rookie Caleb Sumich showed further improvement in the highly competitive Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup field. The young Australian gained two positions compared to his qualifying result, taking the chequered flag in 15th place.

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season continues from 26–28 June at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, where BWT Lechner Racing will contest its home event in front of local fans and partners.
